The Club Trophy was added to the Race Around Briggs with the fifth running back in 2002. The intent from the beginning was to bring more competition to middle of the pack runners who run for fun and mostly finish out of the trophy class.

To do this, the team consists of at least 15 members. In the early days, this was 20 members, but sometimes we didn’t fill the teams, so 15 has become the team size over the last bunch of years.

For scoring purposes, it is the top 15 team members, but teams may have more than 15 runners. Scoring is based on position of finish and the scores for team members is summed to get a team total. Low score wins.

For the duration there have been 3 teams:

           Mid Hudson Road Runners

           Onteora Runners

           Milanrunning

MHRRC has proved the stronger team winning the first five contests. And then, when it seemed that interest might be falling, Onteora took the 2006 trophy and, through what some might call sleight of hand, Milanrunning took the 2007 title.

This year’s competition should be lively. Race Director Talmage has sent special invitations to all the local running clubs in the Hudson Valley and perhaps we will get a new team to enliven the competition even more.

The appeal of the large team format is the inclusion of more runners. The team members are identified by colors and every runner is in competition with one of the runners just up the road. Passing a person of another team is a swing of 2 points. Every pair of runners is an individual race. Now that’s competition.

Now in the last two years, the race director has made the team competition a little sloppy. So this year, we are tightening things. Team Registration with a team list included will have to be filed 15 minutes prior to race start.

Two years ago, a late runner was put on the wrong team. This was discovered after the unofficial results had been announced at the race. So the website and the papers did not report what the participants had thought.

Last year, the race director, who incidentally doubles as the team captain for milanrunning, added any runner to the Milan team who had not expressed another  team preference. Well guess what? This was a winning strategy. Many of the top 20 were not on another team. Milanrunning got the boost and took the trophy.

It has since been decided that this will no longer be allowed. Runners must select the team. Team registrations will be closed at 9:45 AM on 4/6/08.

We will see how it goes this year. We know that at this time, MHRRC has made noises about winning the title back.
